Senior Low Latency OEMS Engineer (Java)
Permanent | New York, NY (Hybrid) | $150,000–$225,000 base + discretionary bonus + full benefits

The Client
An established multi-strategy hedge fund with a global footprint, known for a disciplined, tech- and data-driven approach to trading and risk.

The Role
Join the team building and running the firm's in-house Order and Execution Management System — a deterministic, event-driven platform on a clustered Aeron/SBE core with FIX links to executing brokers. It's the path every order takes from trader to market, serving desks in New York, London and Tokyo, live on equities and expanding into new asset classes. You'll own latency-critical components end to end, and work AI-first: coding agents are part of daily design, build, review and production work.

What You'll Do

  • Build zero-allocation, latency-critical logic in the sequenced core: order lifecycle, pre-trade risk, broker routing, position marking
  • Own market-facing gateways: FIX (initiator/acceptor), a client-facing Aeron/SBE API, Kafka/Protobuf integrations
  • Apply hot-path Java tricks: object/buffer reuse, primitive collections, flyweight codecs, off-heap buffers, GC-free steady state
  • Benchmark and tune latency with JMH, hop-to-hop production timing and distributed tracing
  • Drive correctness with BDD, snapshot/replay-equivalence and integration tests
  • Use AI coding agents daily and help evolve the team's shared agent rules, skills and guardrails
  • Support deployment: containers, config-managed releases, CI, cross-region DR

What You'll Bring

  • Expert Java (current JDK), deep low-latency chops: allocation-free code, mechanical sympathy, lock-free/single-writer design
  • Aeron (transport/archive/cluster) + Agrona, or equivalent (Chronicle, LMAX Disruptor)
  • SBE and/or Protobuf; FIX session/application level (Artio or QuickFIX/J a plus)
  • GC tuning for low latency (ZGC, Shenandoah, G1), JIT/escape analysis, JFR or async-profiler
  • Real, hands-on use of AI coding agents (e.g. Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) on production work — including knowing when to override them
  • 6+ years Java, 3+ years on low-latency trading systems (OMS/EMS, exchange/broker gateways, market data, or HFT)
  • Track record owning a production trading system on Linux, incident response included
  • CI/CD, containers (Docker/Podman), config management (Ansible or similar), AWS
Nice to Have
  • Python
  • Equities experience
