Role: Backend engineer

What you’ll be doing
You’ll play a key role as a senior individual contributor, taking ownership of building and evolving a modern, cloud-based product. This is a hands-on position where you’ll write high-quality, maintainable code across the stack while setting a strong example for engineering standards and best practices.
You’ll work closely with product and leadership to translate business priorities into clear, deliverable technical plans, making balanced decisions around speed, quality and risk. A big part of the role is improving how software is delivered identifying bottlenecks and introducing better ways of working, including thoughtful use of automation and AI-assisted development tools.
You’ll also help shape engineering practices across code quality, testing, CI/CD and architecture, and step in on more complex technical challenges, whether that’s performance, scalability or system design. Alongside this, you’ll contribute to building a culture of continuous improvement, where new tools and approaches are evaluated pragmatically and adopted where they add real value.

Experience
- 4+ years experience as a software developer
- Backend experience with either Java or Kotlin
- Solid understanding of frontend development (e.g. react) and experience building and maintaining production grade user facing applications
- Databases expreince such as postgresql or mongodb in scalable, real-world environments
- AWS experience
- familiarity with containerisation and infrastructure as code (e.g. docker, terraform)
- experience designing and maintaining ci/cd pipelines and owning services through the full delivery lifecycle
- Practical use of AI assisted development tools or automation to improve engineering workflows, with an understanding of associated risks (e.g. security, maintainability)
- Worked in a regulatory industry
