Job Title: Head of AI Research

Salary: $300K - $380K

Location: San Francisco, CA

A well-funded startup in the AI financial technology space is hiring a Head of AI / Principal AI Architect to join in a hands-on capacity with the opportunity to eventually lead a team. In this role, you will be the first AI Researcher hire, reporting directly to the CTO, with the opportunity to take on a leadership role with early stage equity. You will focus on building Foundation Models from scratch, developing custom fine-tuned models for financial data, and designing AI orchestration systems that drive new capabilities. The ideal candidate has a PhD in AI/ML, 5+ years of experience in leading AI labs or organizations, and a strong track record at a well-recognized company. 

Requirements

• PhD in AI/ML or a related field with 5+ years of post-PhD experience

• Proven background in AI research and system architecture at a leading AI organization

• Hands-on experience building Foundation Models and fine-tuning custom models

• Expertise in AI orchestration and working with multimodal data

• Strong publication record is a plus, though this role emphasizes applied system building

• Passion for startups, financial technology, and pioneering AI solutions

• Desire to work onsite and closely collaborate with the executive team
